Homemade hummus

Homemade hummus makes a delicious snack. Simply add vegetables of your choice and dip in for a healthy pit stop. Alternatively use your hummus as a replacement for mayonnaise or salad cream on your lunchtime pitta bread or wrap. We have lots of ideas - more here and more here.


  • ½ tin (or soaked, then cooked) chickpeas, reserving some of the liquid
  • 1-2 TBS lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic crushed
  • 1 TBS tahini (sesame seed paste)
  • ½ tsp cumin (optional)
  • Soy sauce (optional) - splash
  • Salt and pepper

  1. Using a mortar and pestle, mix and mash all the ingredients together - adding some of the reserved liquid from the tinned or cooked chickpeas - to a smooth, paste-like consistency. Alternatively, puree in a food processor.
