How To Have A Healthy 2020

The New Year brings about renewed healthy intentions, but you may wonder how to have a healthy 2020. Whatever your specific goal, following these 5 tips will help to keep you healthy, accountable and in control.

1. New Year Resolutions

  • Make only one resolution to give yourself the best chance of success
  • Plan how you are going to successfully achieve your resolution
  • Make a resolution you have never made before
  • Keep your resolution specific
  • Breakdown your resolution into stages, and reward yourself each time you complete a stage

2. Avoid Faddy Diets

  • Sustained and healthy weight loss will not be achieved through a fad diet
  • Many fad diets are nutritionally unbalanced and can lead to long-term poor health
  • Some fad diets cut out certain foods or food groups that contain vital nutrients and vitamins that the body needs
  • Some fad diets dramatically decrease your carbohydrate intake, leaving you with low energy levels

3. Lose Weight Healthily

You may have set a goal to lose weight this year. This can be achieved through small alterations to your diet and lifestyle, you needn’t overhaul the life you once knew. We have a whole host or recipes for you to choose from online.

  • Eat lean meat such as chicken or turkey
  • Choose low fat dairy options such as semi-skimmed milk or low-fat yoghurt
  • Choose wholegrains such as brown rice and wholemeal bread instead of the white varieties as you will feel fuller for longer
  • Eat breakfast – this will help to reduce snacking
  • If you feel the need to snack, have a drink first and wait 20 minutes, we are often mistake hunger for thirst
  • Have at least 5 portions of fruit and veg each day

4. Find Your Love For Exercise

  • Aim to incorporate 30 minutes of exercise into your day 5 times a week; this can include walking part of your work commute, walking the dog, gardening or cycling
  • If you are able to cycle to work, do it!
  • Aim to reach 10,000 steps a day
  • Find an exercise class; there are so many on offer now that it’s only a matter of time before you find one you love
  • Exercise with the family; this can include walking, cycling or a kick about in the park

5. Make time for yourself

  • Set aside some time each week to do exactly what you want to do, even if that’s just to sit and read a few chapters of a book with no interruptions
  • Spend time doing what makes you happy
  • Encourage your friends and family to do the same
  • Find a hobby
  • Take some time to find out more about mindfulness and meditation to improve your mental health
