National Obesity Awareness Week

This January, National Obesity Awareness Week will run from 14-20 January, spread the word by cooking your family a healthy dinner, encouraging a friend to join you in that gym class or simply take yourself off for a walk with the dog.


Obesity is more prevalent than ever. The Healthy Survey for England published in December 2019 stated that in England:

  • In 2018, 67% of men were overweight or obese, 60% of women were overweight or obese
  • During 2018, 2% of men and 4% of women were morbidly obese
  • Throughout 2018, 34% of men and 48% of women had a very high waist measurement, indicating central obesity
  • 56% of adults were at increased, high or very high risk of chronic disease due to their waist circumference or BMI
  • In 2018, 28% of children between ages 2-15 were overweight or obese, including 15% who were obese


What are the risks of obesity?

  • Heart disease and stoke
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Some cancers
  • Gallbladder disease and gallstones
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout
  • Breathing problems, including sleep apnea and asthma


What can you do to maintain a healthy weight?

  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet, consisting of 3 main meals (a couple of snacks can be eaten if needed)
  • Eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg each day
  • Get active, aim to take part in at least 5 30 minute exercise sessions each week, this can include gardening or a brisk walk with the dog
  • Plan your meals ahead of time
  • Connect with others, helping each other on your weight loss journey will make motivation easier to maintain and increase accountability
