Obesity Related Hospital Admissions Have Increased By 18 per cent In 12 Months

Throughout 2016/17, there were 617,000 hospital admissions where obesity was listed as a primary or secondary diagnosis. These admissions have increased by 18% from the previous year with 524,725 admissions made throughout 2015/16.

It comes as no surprise that these are the highest level of admissions since records began and is a staggering 50% higher than recorded admissions only 4 years ago. Primary and secondary diagnoses related to obesity can include weight-loss surgery, stroke, heart attack, angina, diabetes and joint problems.

Public Health England stated that the figures show ‘obesity and its associated health risks remain a significant challenge’.

National statistics show that 26% of English adults are obese, with 33% of men and 42% of women not meeting their recommended levels of weekly activity and only 24% of men and 28% of women consuming the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

The above statistics go a long way in explaining why obesity related hospital admissions are on the rise. Understanding the importance of health and wellbeing and the impact nutrition and exercise has on it is vital to reduce the occurrence of ill health and hospital stays.
