Fact File - Depression, anxiety and stress; healthy diet

Major depression is the No.1 psychological disorder in the western world.

It is growing in all age groups, in virtually every community, and the growth is seen most in the young, especially teens. At the rate of increase, it will be the 2nd most disabling condition in the world by 2020, behind heart disease - more here regarding Major depression facts.

However, for many Major depression is not the issue but a more minor (but nonetheless disabling) depression combined with anxiety and stress.  Coping with the stresses and strains of life can be very hard.  Juggling working life, family life and a social life can be difficult.

Middle aged men and women whose diet is loaded with junk food - such as processed meat and sugary drinks - are at greater risk from depression, according to a new study.  The research was published in Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, European Journal of Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition and Diabetic Medicine and the information can be found here in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

Eating a healthy diet helps you to improve your much needed energy and focus for your busy day and have enough left over for your family and social life.  A healthy diet will help you to get a balance in your life.

Eating junk food has a negative effect on mental health, making those who consume it regularly feel depressed, according to a Spanish study looking at 9,000 people who consumed baked goods.  The study found that people who consumed the baked goods were 37% more likely to become depressed over a 6 year period - more on this study can be found here.
